I spent the weekend last weekend with my children at a horse camp. My heart broke over and over as my beloved Lilly was excluded from the clinics as the other children at camp learned horsemanship on their horses Lilly sat in her chair and said I can do this! Why won't they let me do this? I don't know how to convince people that Lilly is capable of riding a horse even though she is in a wheel chair.
Lilly is a vivacious 13 year old girl, who loves what every girl raised around horses does. She loves to ride her horses. In 2008 Lilly was hit by a car traveling at a high rate of speed and was paralyzed. When the doctors broke the news to us Lilly’s first words were, “I will never be able to ride my horse or my bike again.” I assured her we would find a way.
I worked hard to find the perfect horse for her but despite my efforts the perfect pony had fallen in my lap. Zip was a pony I bought for my dad, but when Lilly bonded with him he became her horse. He was an unbroke two year old colt and it took a lot of time and dedication to make him safe for her. Finally I felt he just needed some polish that I could not give him so I sent him to the trainer. The trainer was ready to send him home when Zip was found in the middle of a field on Christmas day. Zip had died with no explanation or warning.
We were devastated; we returned to the old 36 year old Pony that Lilly had been getting by with, and resumed a search for the perfect pony. The trainer found a large pony/small horse with the perfect temperament. She is just a 3 year old and needs miles and time but I know we will find success with Rosie.
We have encountered two problems with this new blessing in our lives. She hates the Saddle Lilly used with Zip and she is too tall to easily get Lilly up on her back. We have found a saddle maker to make a saddle that mimics the old style saddle with the high cantle and the large swells that helps hold lilly safely in the saddle without the danger of strapping her to a 1000 lb animal. This saddle maker will work with us to design a saddle that fits Rosie and Lilly. New saddles are extremely expensive and it is a cost that our family cannot afford without your help. Rosie needs to be comfortable to keep Lilly safe.
I have decided to support Lilly in being brave and moving towards her goal of racing around the barrels once again (Or safely walking down a trail as I would prefer) by getting her a new saddle and giving her the tools to prove to everyone that she can do this!
